Too Much Quiet

Being from the city, Too much quiet makes me cringe. What sirens do for others, Silence makes my brain unhinge. I’ll take it in small doses - It’s initially a balm - But over time, it does The opposite of bringing calm. The birdsong helps and music, too, Yet it’s not quite enough. For sensory survival, I prefer the noisy stuff.

People could feel lonely in a city, but not so extremely.

"too much quiet makes me cringe" - I am laughing about this one; I do not think I have ever been anywhere in the world where there was too much quiet. In the country all we hear is peep, cheep, trill, cluck, cock-a-doodle-doo, scream, and then there are the fire truck and ambulance noises from the freeway. Ugh! I liked the poem, but I am still thinking I wish I could find the place where there is "too much quiet".

I wish I were like you, Ilene, able to tolerate some measure of noise. Silence is the soil of creativity, meditation, and thinking. The only so, with my computer radio which is on most of the day playing "classical" music, and always at a reasonable volume. I find it acts as a catalyst to writing many of my poems. / Maurice
