To Serve and Protect

When a black man has a knee pressed against his throat
police brutality has no known antidote.
He can't breathe; cut no slack.

Complaining he was choking, they ignored his plea,
and one cop kept on pressing his weight on that knee.
Both hands cuffed in the back.

People watched in horror as his life got snuffed out;
all they could do for George Floyd was stand there and shout.
He's died for being black.

Andrea Dietrich Date: 7/29/2020 1:29:00 PM also I am noticing that strict syllable count does not seem to matter, as long as the syllable counts are almost the same for lines 1 and 2 and then shorter for line 3. Please will you soupmail me if I got that wrong? Login to Reply Emile Pinet Date: 7/29/2020 2:20:00 PM Hi Andrea, I see nowhere in the definition that calls for a specific syllable count but the tail should be consistent at about half of the other lines...I prefer a set syllable count myself but it isn't mandatory (this poem uses 12 12 6), Emile.
