To My Puppy

Puppy laying
Head on knee,
I will take
Good care of thee.

Laying there
Soft and warm,
Always loving
Since you were born.

When I had to go
Away to war,
I could tell
You knew the score.

When I fight
You're on my mind,
Wishing you'd be here
All the time.

You were first,
At the door,
When notice came,
I died at war.

Puppy laying
On my grave,
I died for your
Freedom to save.

Congrats on your placement in my contest Robert. I really liked the devotion of the dog you used here. Well written. As a dog owner and veteran that picture got to me.
