Growing up in Chicago in the 1950's, corporal punishment was meted out in school by the teacher and/or at home by the parent.  They definitely had each others' backs.  Hard to imagine anymore today...

On tests, we cheated sometimes, to get 'A's' If ever caught, with our backsides we would pay

Hi Gershon, In Junior school, I was punished often and had my palms smacked with a ruler, because i loved playing marbles with the boys and that wasn't ladylike the headmaster always said. I used to be very good and used to win the silver gunes (don't know if I spelt gunes right) Till my father visited the Headmaster and thing normalised again, but I still played marbles with the boys! Hugs and blessings, Jennifer.

Well, count me as #1. Add in about 15 of my friends. Back in those days at least parents didn't tell kids that the teacher didn't know what he/she was talking about---like they do today. ~ Still a bit sore after all these years. LOL.
