To Die For
To Die For
What would I die for,
if push came to shove.
What would I give
for the life of a love.
Would I be like John Wayne,
ride in head first.
Or like the disciple, Peter
and deny with a curse.
Do I cling to life
with such desperate pity.
That my soul is blind
to the pain in the city.
When it’s time for courage,
to stand or to run,
when I look for answers,
I find there is none.
Where is it written,
this question I brave.
Is the response I seek
in some life I save.
History is replete
with cowards that crawl.
Heroes of valor
who nobly fall.
Is death not honored
when given for all.
And cowardice condemned
when refusing the call.
As a man thinks,
so shall he be.
Shackled to chains
or striving to be free.
I wish I knew a solution
as I go about life.
As I enjoy its pleasures
and deal with its strife.
Is there anything I would die for,
a question I continue to ask.
A better question:
Is life worth living
if there's nothing
worth dying for.
