Three Messages In a Bottle

Three messages in a bottle

One night I put a message in a bottle
and threw it out to watch it sail away
It travelled many miles across the sea
and found it’s way to you with love from me

We met and dated, later married, tears in every eye
In our home we placed the bottle on a shelf up high
deciding it should sit untouched because it was our pride
but I cheated and hid my whiskey deep inside

I thought my secret was so safe while up so very high
but while in me the liquor made bad words that made you cry
this second message loud and clear would quickly meet it’s fate
because now my spoken message was of hate

One night the bottle exploded into pieces
and shattered and exposed the lies I hid
it saw your pain and smashed across the floor
yes it had taken all it could and took no more

I cleaned the mess of broken glass and whiskey
and took an oath to send such hurt no more
you never asked what happened to the bottle
you seemed to know the what and why and how
that it had taken all it could and took no more

I learned a lesson few have ever known
That bottles send a message all their own
It had taken all it could and took no more
Yes, it had taken all it could, and took no more
