thought I was down for the count

the situation was almost too unbearable to bear
I had chosen to change locations, and jobs at fifty-five
After twenty-three one-hour interviews, I was losing hope.
School was starting in a week, and my expertise was in school counseling.

I had been attending a church where people began to love me.
One of the ministers asked me what they could do for me.
I explained my situation, and she rallied the women of the church.
I had three interviews that week, and I was offered all three jobs.

I put the first two off, asking until Friday.
On Friday I had my only interview with a person in a school system.
When she asked me to tell her about me, I began to cry.
I sobbed and sobbed and sobbed.

She told me to stop. She had already heard about my church work.
She was going to give me the job before she met me.
I thought I was down for the count,
but thanks to these church women I was wrong.
