Those Who Wear the Blue
To those who nightly watch are keeping
while the rest of us are sleeping;
to those who keep our streets secure,
with valiant heart and conscience pure---
whose oath to serve and guard is true;
we recognize the ones in blue.
For hours long and shifts mundane---
in cold and heat, in snow and rain;
for stoic duty to commission
while facing danger and derision;
for saving lives by laying theirs down,
we honor those who wear the brown.
To those we count upon to answer
in times of crisis or disaster,
whose sirens bring the hope of aid,
whose presence makes us less afraid,
whose arms defend us from attack:
We salute the ones in black.
May the faces of those they have protected
in their badges be reflected;
the crucial service they perform
remembered by their uniforms.
For all the noble work they do,
thank God for those who wear the blue.
