Those Were the Days

Those Were the Days
Dr. James E. Martin
©June, 2013

There once was a day in our past,
That there beat in every breast,
A sense of gratitude and pride,
That we were the best of the best.

We were viewed by the entire world,
Among countries – leader of the pack.
Many braved hostilities to here come,
From America they’d never go back.

Our leaders we beheld in sincerity,
Of most we would say we were proud.
Today this is sadly not so,
Many confirm this with voices loud.

Will we ever to greatness return?
This question grows more intense,
As we watch so sadly these days,
A decline in our nation’s defense.

Corruption at the top is increasing,
They seem to simply blow it away.
When those with convictions speak,
They’re viewed as from a distant day.

I too see a slippery slope, however history will repeat itself. America will retain its greatness due to the constitution and the Gettysburg address. We are still the nation many millions would love to live in. This 4th of July celebrate freedom, democracy and all the other freedoms we cherish.

Dr. Jim, a very politically astute poem written with genuine care and concern for the seemingly slow demise of morals, values and corruption in government. I totally agree with the sentiments ...very well written
