Those High School Years

I remember those high school years When being popular was so important, I tried so hard to fit in with my peers. Each grade was like changing gears Readjusting to teachers was torment, I remember those high school years. I spent lots of time in laughter and tears Some years wondering what it all meant, I tried so hard to fit in with my peers. Freshman year was rampant with fears, Hoping the dean’s office never to be sent I remember those high school years. All through the sports’ jocks nasty sneers I was a band boy carrying my instrument, I tried so hard to fit in with my peers. I think I may have even tried a few beers Some credence with the guys that lent, I remember those high school years I tried so hard to fit in with my peers.

Nothing wrong with this "I was a band boy carrying my instrument," - which instrument was it?

I played the cornet in the high school band. My senior year I was the Drum Major. I also played in the Berea College band my freshman year. Then, I switched instruments and eventually played the clarinet in the Akron Symphony Orchestra.

Happy memories Milton, back then we all wanted to be part of the gang, then we get older and wiser and go out own way. Tom

So true. Amazing how satisfying, or being like, our peers isn't so important as we grow older.

I Forgot to comment: the night before you posted this poetry, I looked up and heard on You Tube that old Cat Stevens song, Old School Yard...

It is simply amazing how coincidences can rise up out of nowhere, meaningful time when something comes to mind. I used to marvel that I would never see a particular car model or color until I bought one, then they seemed to be everywhere. I think of the number of times I write a poem and several others on the same, or a similar, theme pop up out of nowhere. And, I know it happens to everyone, or at least I suspect it does.

Thanks, Kim. When I was a senior I thought the year would never end. I kept saying to myself, When will I ever get through with this!" Now, I look back, and it was merely a blip in my life.
