This Day

You just smiled
As I continued to walk by.
You caught the reflection of the ring
And the sparkle in my eye.
A tarnished ring on a tarnished chain,
Just like "My First Love"
But now that love is over.
Everything's said and done.
You realized what you had
As she walks up from behind.
It registers on my face but not hers
When the sadness came to your eyes.
I could see it and I wanted to stop,
But at the same time I knew we were through.
She just continued with her story,
Not noticing something's wrong with you.
You tried to keep smiling
As I made myself walk by.
You saw the ring around my neck
And we both tried not to cry.
Time moved on and so did we.
We should just walk away,
And when we think about our memories,
We'll both add in this day.
