They Were Gone

They were gone - lost to us - its sadness was cruel - and our lives changed in that instant. Reality - distorted beyond the grasp of our understanding. Our world that was - no longer is. They were gone - and everything seemed to go into slow motion - time seemed to stand still for an endless second and grief throbbed inside my chest. My heart ached so badly - that it robbed me of my ability to think. They were gone - and as always, happens in the wake of that realization I am left in the blackened depths of the greatest sadness in my life. They were gone - and now as I lay here in this cold lonely cell - the setting seems all to appropriate - after being held prisoner by this tragedy for so long. They were gone - and finally I understood - I had been pushed past anger, past protest - but never past the endless stream of tears and heartbreak. They were gone - and the toll of our loneliness runs far deeper than anyone could ever imagine.
