There's Pain Behind Those Smiling Eyes

There's pain behind those smiling eyes
In the colour of grief.
That tear that almost escaped notice
Is the colour of relief.
There's pain behind those smiling eyes
In the colour of empathy.
They've walked in similar shoes to yours.
You're in good company.
There's pain behind those smiling eyes
In the colour of disgust
At the growing number of reasons
Why people are hard to trust!
There's pain behind those smiling eyes
In the colour of loneliness -
Feeling trapped in a world of isolation
Where they feel understood less and less.
There's pain behind those smiling eyes
In the colour of detachment
From something that meant the world to them
Yet they fear reattachment.
There's pain behind those smiling eyes
In the colour of insecurity
They are far too hard on themselves
Expecting premature maturity.
There's pain behind those smiling eyes
In the colour of doubt.
There's so much more they desire to give
But still have themselves to figure out.
There's pain behind those smiling eyes
In the colour of unfulfilled dreams,
A disappointment at things not working out
The way at first it seems....
Behind a pair of smiling eyes
May be a Kaleidoscope of pain:
Compassion is important
For some choose to dance in the rain.
