There Is Always Room Here
There is always room here—
You know who you are,
And what you mean to me.
You are the bridge at evening
Where quiet waters pass beneath,
The long street silvered after rain,
The forest singing softly
Of green bushes full of leaves
And tall thick trees
That murmur to the wind like prayer.
Butterflies drift through the silence
As though the world were kind,
And above them stretch dark blue skies
With a moon that is always blue.
You are the brightest star
Over the deep green sea,
The salt upon my lips,
The hush of tides returning.
The oysters I eat are raw,
Sharp with the salty taste of living,
As love itself is sharp sometimes—
Beautiful because it bleeds the heart awake.
There is always room here
For your footsteps,
For your voice at twilight,
For the sorrow and sweetness of you.
Even when the earth grows lonely
And the trees stand still as memory,
I keep a place beside me
Where your name blooms endlessly
Like summer against the sea.
