The Written Word
I love a challenge any time, contests that make me think,
so, I will pit my brain against the best.
Try to produce some clever words that I can interlink-
ensure I am creative for this test.
What a delight it is to write, and then have other’s read
ones work that is original to find.
All kinds of subject’s prose, or rhyme, I really feel indeed
exposes thoughts arising from our mind.
With pen in hand write down the words, then edit time again.
make sure the meter’s right along with rhyme.
But, if the rhyme is difficult, to force one must refrain,
the poem should read smoothly all the time.
Writing challenges that we face will test each poet’s skill,
poetic styles may differ every day.
Sometimes a Sonnet, or an Ode, a Haiku or Kyrielle
when read out loud a message should convey.
Many poets I admire: their work flies off the page.
and leaves me wanting to keep read more.
Or recreate their writing style, then readers will engage,
so learning from their work I will explore.
There’s Paterson, now he can write a dam good Aussie yarn-
he wrote about a dangerous mountain ride.
Where riders, most were mountain bred, took horses from their barn,
and chased Regret’s young colt while all astride.
Slopes of the mountain were too steep; they faltered at the top-
but the man from Snowy River went ahead.
Surveyed the scene, then cracked his whip, his pony did not stop,
and with a cheer straight down the mountain tread.
All watched him, as he wheeled the herd, the colt by then was spent,
the man from Snowy River had outrun.
He turned the horses, took them home, for that was his intent,
a legend now: this Snowy River son.
Next, Dorothea McKellar, wrote about a sunburnt land-
its beauty and all splendour told with rhyme.
Through imagery, her words they paint a picture that is grand,
including change in scenery over time.
Within her words the reader sees her colours’ green and gold,
the jewelled seas, and ragged mountains high.
This wide brown country-we call home, her treasures do unfold,
all captured through this skilful poet’s eye.
To write, there should be passion, that ignites inventive minds,
So, they may put their thoughts down on a page.
Exploring other poets’ work, their styles and language finds
when written well, their poems cross each age.
For one can then appreciate their work on any day-
and marvel at the story through each line.
The challenge therefore for me is this, to find the right pathway,
hope readers seek some poems that are mine.
