The Winter Hummingbird

The hummingbird still comes
to the feeder hung to delight
the aged eyes of Mum,
shadowed now with twilight,
and to dance with her inner sprite.

The bird has not forsaken winter,
still sparkles with the dew of spring
and with the warmth of summer,
making mother's inner child sing
of joy the afterlife will bring.

I have only seen a hummingbird on video. How lovely reality sounds in your poem, especially for your mother's joy, to double it. There is such living-ness in a tiny body, so pretty. Celebrating life. J :)

So true. There are some amazing bird calls too : Kookaburras, a variety of cockatoos, magpies...

Hummingbirds are beautiful. Don't feel bad that you haven't seen hummingbirds in person. I haven't seem any Australian animals in person! I imagine there are some beautiful birds there.
