The Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog (1818) by Caspar David Friedrich shows a lone man standing on a rocky cliff, facing a foggy, mountainous landscape. A key work of Romanticism, it explores solitude, nature’s power, and the mystery of identity, with the man’s back turned to invite reflection.

grey hush wind’s crush fog’s veil hearts pale black coat lost note thin light love’s blight back turned flames burned
