Notes About The Poem

The Unquiet Mind

("Tree of Life," 2013, original pen and ink)

The unquiet mind whispers incessantly
Morning, noon and night
Wishing for an audience
Or even just a nod.

The King (or Queen as it may be) meanwhile
Prattles on without a pause
So much to do, and to decide
If only his/her subjects would subject in kind.

But in the fields and dreary lanes
The peasants hoe and toil without rest
Without hope, and so no respect
For all the noise that comes on high.

In the dead of night when all is still
And owls hunt and prey the little ones
The unquiet mind releasing demon dreams
Smoothly soothes the willing blind

Up or down, in or out
It matters not which kind you are
For all for one and one for all
We sink or swim this time around.
