The Ultimate Sacrifice

The Ultimate Sacrifice
Kevin Davis — Memorial Day 2025

They left home, young and full of promise —
She, the first in her family bound for college,
He, a preacher from a small-town church with a steeple —
Both ready to give their lives for their country.

They touched down in foreign lands, weapons in hand,
Never imagining that killing could become part of their nature.
Yet among their squad, they found a family —
Shared dreams of the futures they would build.

Until the ambush — shadows shifted, fire erupted.
Bullets screamed, grenades shattered,
Metal met flesh, striking brothers and sisters.
They stood, they fought, they defended.

Through the chaos, they took their own wounds,
Warm blood spilled, life slipping away.
Side by side in the dust, hands entwined,
Holding on to the last threads of hope.

Evacuation came — they held tight,
Clinging to breath, to each other.
But when the chopper reached its mark,
They had already gone — together.

Returned home, draped in sorrow,
Once promising, once young, once invincible.
Friends, soldiers, bound beyond life —
Silent whispers of love upon their lips.

Such is the ultimate sacrifice
That people give to their country.
