The Television

What manner of innovation so ingenious; electronic box made to serve our audio-visual demands. This square-shaped screen that comes to life by just a switch, reduces the size of the globe in every living room. And entertains its audience every length of time they please. What comedy so laughable, what obscenity so carnally delightful, and what gory tales so horrific can this magical innovation not willingly render? Still it relives the eventful past for generations unborn.

Joseph, I love your poem, but there is one line in particular that speaks to me: "it reduces the size of the globe" . . . for sadly I believe it does, but not in a good way. We rarely hear much about the rest of the world unless there is an act of nature or terrorism, or perhaps an election. I wish this and future generations could go beyond the sound bites :) Amitiés

Thank you so much for your comments. The television also helps us know about the culture and way of life of other very distant climes. For example, it was through the television I got to know about the Amish people of the Northeastern United States, the sami people of Russia and the Nordic countries, etc.
