The Sunflower Peeks Over the Fence
The sunflower peeks over the fence
to see if the grass is greener on the other side
only to discover pavement and hearing shouts
of children riding their bicycles with pride,
training wheels are missing and no longer a guide.
The sunflower peeks over the fence,
watching a neighbor walk her leashed puppy,
a pull and tug struggle for both to endure,
the pudgy bundle of joy wants to run
as the owner pulls gently and ends the fun.
The sunflower peeks over the fence,
watching young couples holding hands,
sharing a special feeling between them,
both smiling at each other as they stroll,
showing happy glances and love aglow.
The sunflower peeks over the fence,
observes garbage cans placed outside,
some with lids shut while others overflow,
cats walk stealthily around their plastic prey,
wishing to lick an opened tuna can for the day.
