The Solitary Toll

THE SOLITARY TOLL
by
JOHN M. ARRIBAS

A FADING PEAL FROM A DISTANT BELL
WHAT EVENTFUL OCCASION DOES IT TELL
IS IT A WEDDING WITH THE PROMISE OF BLISS
FORGED WITH AN OATH SEALED WITH A KISS
OR IS IT A CHRISTENING BLESSING A NAME
A BOUNTIFUL FUTURE ESCHEWING SHAME

OR IS IT A CALL TO THE CONGREGATION
PLEADING FOR A VOW OF DEDICATION
OR IS IT A TOLL FOR THE RECENTLY DEPARTED
LEAVING FAMILY N FRIENDS BROKENHEARTED
ALL THINGS MUST END WHETHER FALSE OR TRUE
THE BELL MY FRIEND IS TOLLING FOR YOU

A GAP IN THE SENTENCE INDICATES A 3 SECOND PAUSE
