The Soldier In You
Although he never was able
To fight with gun in hand,
This man would die for his country
In attempt to make you understand.
How much the men and women of war
Mean to your very lives,
Support them and pray for them
For they determine if your freedom survives.
He writes of war
With words that make you feel,
All the confusion, the pain, the fear
He brings it to you making it very real.
He wages his own war
Inside his heart and soul,
The black abyss always near
Blacker than that of coal.
So many trials he has survived
None in which he asked for,
He fought and overcame
Much like his ancestors before.
He is there watching over us
Quiet and strong,
Ready to battle the enemies
Threatening to do us wrong.
Eventually every soldier
Must let go and give up the fight,
For you have done your very best
Doing what you believed is right.
Someday that time will come
I hope that I will be near,
For then it will be my turn
To wipe away that single tear.
The one trickling down your cheek
The one that held all your pain,
It will forever be gone
You will be at peace once again.
Never losing your faith
In the red, white, and blue,
God will take you home for He too
Sees the soldier in you.
