The Silver Queen We Conquered

Author Note

This poem is inspired by Apollo 11, July 1969. After ten years of effort, mankind reached what once seemed an impossible destination. I wrote it as a love story — the moon as a proud, distant beloved. Four days through darkness to meet her. And in that silence, we made a home.

         The Silver Queen We Conquered

Ten years we burned to reach your face,
You silver queen in a velvet place.
We called you far, we called you cold,
You watched us with a gaze of gold.

Four days we sailed through endless night,
Chasing you with borrowed light.
You wore your craters like proud scars,
And laughed at us from among the stars.

Then Eagle bowed in Tranquil Sea,
And dust rose up to welcome me.
"One small step," the brave man said,
While all the world held up its head.

You are the lover we could not touch,
The dream we wanted oh so much.
Conceited moon with a haughty gleam,
You made us chase an impossible dream.

Your regolith, a mirror bright,
Showed us our own fragile light.
We came as kings, but left as prayer,
Humbled by the way you stare.

Like lovers meeting after pain,
We danced with you in silent rain.
No air to speak, no sound to keep,
Just heartbeats in a world so deep.

Away from noise, away from crowds,
We built a home beneath your clouds.
A home of peace, a home of calm,
Where silence is a healing balm.

1969, we won your hand,
We left our footprints on your sand.
You still pretend you do not care,
But poets find you everywhere.

Oh vain, oh fair, oh distant bride,
We crossed the dark to reach your side.
You may be proud, you may be stone,
But now, my love, we call you home.
