The Silent Guardian

The wind rustles by me
And blows over my tuft of hair
But I stand still enjoying it,
While into the heavens I stare.

The violent rains and thundering storms
That often give us a scare,
Usher people under my shade;
My warm and affectionate care.

At all the times of dire need,
I welcome with open arms:
The poor, the tired and the hungry
To give them shelter, rest and alms

I am your silent guardian
Who watches over you all the time;
But inspite of what I've done for you
You subject me to such a heinous crime:

You murder my brothers in masses
And poison the air we breathe
How much more do you want from us?
Haven't you already got what you need?

You always take advantage of us
And exploit us in any way you can,
Don't you know that without us
There will remain not a single man?

I was there long before you came,
I will remain long after you are gone;
But if you keep on mistreating me
There'll be nothing left for anyone.

I was, I am and I will be
Your friend; please don't ignore me
Don't you realise I too have feelings?
Is it because I am just a tree?
