The Signs Are There

You say you always see them smile
But have you looked into their eye
And see the sadness hidden there
Do you know that they don't care?
Have you noticed they seem withdrawn,
Do you know they feel alone?
Do you see them look away
And try to keep their tears at bay?
Do you see them hide behind their fears
Because they feel like no one cares?
When you make plans and they change their mind,
Do you ask them if they're fine?
When they say they're not ok
Do you look the other way?
When they wish that they were dead
Do you say it's in their head?
Are you there when they call,
To pick them up when they fall?
Do you see them pretend to be happy
When things are as bad as they can be?
Do you hear 'I'm fine' when clearly it's not true ?
Do they laugh to hide their feelings from you?
Do you see the cuts on their arm?
Do you know they try to self harm?
You need them and they're there for you,
But the reverse of that just isn't true.
You see them but you never realize
The sorrow written in their eyes.
You never try to show you care,
You take for granted they're always there.
But one day you will understand
When they lie dead by their own hand,
You'll cry and say you didn't know,
You'll wonder why they had to go,
And then it will be to late to care,
To see the signs which were always there.
Before they come to that bitter end,
Hold their hand and be their friend,
Be the shoulder for them to weep,
Be someone that they can keep.
Let them know they're not alone ,
Show them the love they've never known,
Give them space, but still be near,
Tell them that you'll always care,
Hold them close while you still can,
Don't let their life slip through your hand.
