This poem was written in response to a man who stepped in front of a subway train to save the life of an alcoholic who had stumbled over the edge in an attempt to get his shoe.
He could be someone’s father Or brother Or friend. He could be The one to cure cancer, The one who Saves a child From a burning building, The one who Sobers up And leads Others to Do so as well. But right now, He’s a drunk Who has probably Spent all of his money On booze, The one Who is ungrateful, The one who Won’t remember, The one who will Lose his life Over a fallen shoe. And you are the one Who can save him.
