The Shade of the Pines
Where are you going little fellow?
To the first grade dear mother of mine
I shall learn what they are teaching
Under the shade of these pines
Where are you going young fellow?
To high school dear mother of mine
To deal with a lot more studies
Under the shade of these pines
Where are you going young soldier?
Overseas to fight dear mother of mine
To answer the call of my country
To keep you free under the shade of these pines
Where are you going wounded soldier?
Back home dear mother of mine
To drink myself into a stupor
Underneath the shade of these pines
Where are you going old man?
To bury this dear mother of mine
She could not grieve any longer
As we laid her under the shade of these pines
Where are you going old soldier?
To join that dear mother of mine
I gave my all when they came to call
Now I lay neath the shade of the pines
