The Sea

If the sea could hear
What would it hear
Would it hear young children crying in fear
Or would it hear the songs
Of migrating whales year after year
What would the sea hear

If the sea could smell
What would it smell
Would it smell oil not cleaned up well
Or would it smell the faint scent
Of a sea slug's jell
What would the sea smell

If the sea could see
What would it see
Would it see trapped sea turtles calling "help me"
Or would it see dolphins
Swimming wild and free
What would the sea see

If the sea could speak
What would it say
Would it say please don't treat me that way
Or would it say
Look at the seals as they swim and they play
We all know what the sea would say
