The Rock
I drank deliciously from your pore
Ate calcium and iron from your ore
And as if not enough I fled the rain
To find your sheltering bosom again
And there were days when the promised manhood
Was a distant mark the sun scrubbed my bone bare
To forget. Yet always before me, there
Defying sun and my weakness you stood,
Unblemished by weathering forces wild
Indomitable mother of the child
And now suddenly this sullen flood grieved
And grumbling against honored mud has cleaved
You from your place. Upon the barren land
Alone, I stumble without your solid hand.
