The Rainbow Couple
We're Jen and Jim--the Rainbow Couple. That's what
friends, especially younger folks, call us. To them we
symbolize cheer and hope for a bright future. Our
closest friends all idolize us.
Today we're at a picnic with friends, old and new.
Spirits are high as we all enjoy a huge feast.
Now it's story time. By popular vote, we're first.
They ALL want hear our love story: high-school
sweethearts, the break up, inability to stay away
from each other, marriage at age 21, two kids,
ups and downs (mostly ups; downs were handled
smoothly), two grandkids, empty nest, sustaining
love for 28 years, . . . Others' stories shine too--
but not like ours!
Now for the fireworks! But the Rainbow Couple's
smiles are brighter than the fireworks. We smile
until our faces hurt.
On the way home, our true colors slink to the forefront,
obliterating the bright hues we show the world. Neither
of us speaks. At home we'll go to our separate rooms.
We deserve an Oscar--or at least a spot on a tooth-
paste commercial.
