The Price of Love

He said dad, no disrespect but I want something different than you, Planting cotton and corn, tending sick animals is not what I want to do. He said I want to be around people, learn new things, I’m just tired of this old farm, Dad, I know this hurts but I swear I mean you no harm. Son you are your own man and I’ll not stand in your way, And I know you’ve thought hard on it, but please hear what I have to say. I know I put a lot on your plate but you’re the only son that I’ve got, And without you to help pick up the pieces, this little farm would go to pot. And one day not too far down the road I was planning on you taking the reigns, But I can see in your eyes your heart has already made the change. I don’t know how long I can keep it going, but I don’t want that to be your worry or concern, I know you’ve been saving up your money, and maybe from this we both can learn. Well next morning paw stayed and helped little Sam load his old truck, And as paw hugged Sam goodbye, five rolled up Franklin’s in Sam’s pocket he stuck. Boy that ain’t much but I know with what you’ve got, you’re gonna do fine, Now you skeedaddle before you get your old paw to start crying. Bout half a mile down the road Sam stopped and had a long hard talk with the Lord, He said Lord I ain’t even gone a mile and this road has done got too hard. He said Lord that old man needs me and loves me and I think I feel the same way too, He said I’ve made up my mind, I’m turning around, going home, that’s exactly what I’m going to do! And as he pulled back into the driveway, he saw the tears in his old daddy’s eyes, He said daddy I’m not leaving, and they hugged and they both had a good cry. But this little episode had refreshed and rekindled something that they both had seemed to have lost, You can’t put a price on love, it has to be given freely, no charge and without any cost.

What a wonderful story, Ronald! I'm so glad the son came back, but it says a lot about "paw" that he was ready to let Sam pursue his own dreams. Sometimes when you set a bird free, it comes back to you. GREAT POEM! Love, Carolyn
