Notes About The Poem

("Peyote Dreams", 2018, original encaustic)

The Power of a Dream

In my layman experience
Of sixty-seven years of dreaming
It is clear to me
Dreams have many special qualities
Of significance beyond waking experience;

1. they can be portals to other realms
2. they can reveal depths of emotion vaster than ordinary human expression
3. they can give greater pleasure than in embodied waking life
4. they can give greater pain than in embodied waking life
5. they can lead to encounters with beings outside one’s own psyche
6. they can give you experience of death
7. they can give you experience of being different people
8. they can give you experience of being different objects
9. they can show you deep patterns of unresolved psychic hope and fear in yourself
10. they can show you deep patterns of unresolved psychic hope and feat in humanity
11. they can allow you to experience states of mind outside of mind itself
12. they can allow you to experience complete and perfect transcendence

In other words, the dream is a complete world
Of experience, both personal and transpersonal
Really no different than the waking one
In essence if not in kind.
In waking life you may have magical thinking
In dreams it can become magical being
Oh, and in the dream;

13. anything is possible to occur to communicate what you are ready to learn
14. you do not need to remember it or even know it has happened to experience it and learn from it
