The Poetry Bird

THE POETRY BIRD

Poetry is a wild bird -
Flies away without your
“Do”s and “don’t”s,
Comes when it feels sure -
Stays for as long or as short as it wants.

You can’t cage it or train it
Or entice it with food or drink -
You put down your crumbs and walk away
Powerless - just think,
Wishing it would come today.

If it sits on your shoulder
For a brief time you are blessed
And when it goes, don’t cry,
For its freedom is what makes it best,
Beautiful and shy.
