The Performance that Broke All Laws

For years, I heard the sound of applause.
Audiences cheering loudly.

In silence, I hear the audience of myself.
A sea of versions, shouting proudly.

I feel the judgement of the crowd,
They've seen me perform before.

The new routine didn't stick as well,
The panel of experts were unsure.

"She's not used this song before,"
"It's too unique of a mix."

"Those moves don't fit the genre..."
"On the scorecard this won't stick."

I'd never seen this me before either,
Performing now makes me trip.

If I was the panel and the audience,
And also the star of the show...

Would I fit their boxes blindly?
Or be brave and give them what I know.

Shouldn't I give them a showcase?
A combination of all of me.

Screw the genres and the boxes,
Rip up the scorecard on stage freely.

Stick up the finger at the judgement,
Because I'd been hard enough on myself.

Step outside the guidelines with pride,
The audience acknowledging my wealth...

Of knowledge and courage,
Genres created out of the blue.

No way to score this one,
Too good to dismiss and better than the top few.

The audience hugs me outside,
The experts meet me too.

They couldn't give me the trophy,
A bite too big to chew.

While I lost the competition,
I won the applause.

An outstanding performance.
That broke all of the laws.
