The People We Should Be Thanking
There is a list of people,
That we seldom refer to,
Containing most of the people who gave us good advice,
Who pointed out paths that we would otherwise not have taken,
Who kickstarted our careers,
Who saw the good in us, when others only saw the bad,
Who invested in our untested abilities,
Who gave us a hug or a smile when it was most needed,
Who expected more of us than we thought we could give,
Who gave us choices not endless chances,
Who never rewarded our bad behaviour,
Who caught us doing things right,
And never put temptations deliberately in our path,
Or used us as pawns in their adult games,
People who stood up for us at great personal cost.
The number of people on my list,
Who are still alive to be thanked and supported in their old age,
Is getting smaller now,
Yet I am comforted by the number of times my name appears,
On someone else's list,
Which reminds me, whenever I question my worth,
That my life has been and is worthwhile,
And the people on my list did not waste their time on me.
