The Pearl - Phw

Only a pearl can come from the sore
Where sand grains grit their teeth
And one deeper than the soul's core.
The emotions like a clam retreat
To the shell of shadows on the street
And we wear mask as substitute
When wings are broken. In a bleat
You stood for me, and sometimes truth
Was not our ally, your hands bled me
Until my transfusion made me clean
To carry pain without plea for sympathy.
You taught me words, what they mean
And how to write them. You swam the sea
With me on your back, the tides
Against us, our sand castles we
Could not protect. The sun rides
Still the grasses by the library
Where you opened the almond shell
With a stone, and I ate the mystery.
That you are a woman, no one could tell
Strong as sea waves
Scion of the warrior of rebellious slaves.
I love you, sister.
