The Palette

The tentative steps you take
is that of a baby learning to walk
you feel your way around
bumping into things
half swearing,
when you bump into a chair
you can’t remember that chair
being in that particular place

the sounds you hear paint a
vivid picture in your head
but since that day everything
is shrouded in black
you call to mind those pink roses
and the purple petals you use to smell,
it brings a smile to your face

you still dream in color even though
your sight has been taken away
you paint your day in every color
that’s on offer on your palette
you draw your strength from the fact that
 you are still alive and
the fact that others were not so lucky…

what a very different way of approaching blindness, Wilma--wasn't sure what to expect when I first read your title--this is really good and it shows the reader to be thankful for the sight that they still have :) just a typo in your 3rd line for "your"--hope this helps & eek what am I still doing here?? going now going now...zzzzzz --nikko :)

A very upbeat perspective makes this compelling poem quite special, Wilma. People who go through life without their sight can only rely on sounds, smells and other senses. However, the person you describe has an admirable, positive view of life. God bless you for sharing this moving poem. Love, Carolyn
