The Owner Builder
You'll never be any good with your hands
as a youngster he was told
It took years to have a go, build confidence
and thus be brave and bold
It began around age mid thirties, helped a builder
construct his house of brick
He then decided to add a little wall
it was solid, it was level, never going to fall
Now at a new location he completed
a mud brick family home
Self esteem now on the rise,
next a passive solar greenhouse,
made of local stone
The addition of a two storey stone extension,
the next project on the list
In the middle of construction, an epiphany,
how life can take an unexpected twist
A realisation that all the building
which previously he had done
From his father, an approval,
is what he hoped would come
But now he knew there was but himself,
any task in the future to be achieved
From himself to himself,
was the only approval to be received
Freedom from the shackles
that had always dogged his life
Nothing further now to keep his mind
supposedly in strife
And so the moves continued
for some further years
More and more construction
now he'd overcome the fears
The projects continued, houses built of strawbale
an extension of hempcrete
And finally owner builder just like all the rest,
a home of steel, the last one to complete
Will he build again, not likely
but as yet he's not uttered never
Necessity sometimes beckons
and on should never utter never ever
