The New Year
As the door to the
holy ark opens
The great shofar
is sounded
Our supplications rise
heavenward like smoke
As the ancient rituals
are performed
We feel the birth
of a new beginning
On these days of awe
we are as one with the angels
Through the synagogue window
a light beam shines through
and dances on the walls
of our temple
Chanting the names of G-D
the congregation rises to its feet
Humbled by this day
we ask for mercy
We wish to be inscribed
in the book of life for peace, prosperity
and health in the
coming year
We have learned from
the teachings of the Fathers
that repentance, prayer and charity
can change our fate
As the great poet said"life is " the potshered that breaks, the grass that
wilts, the dream that flies away"
Yes, our days are brief
but touched by celestial magic
we can taste inner freedom
and know spiritual ecstacy
during these Days of Awe
and feel divine love
in the verydepths of our being
