Notes About The Poem

"Scientists can't agree on whether the Y chromosome, which has lost 97% of its genes over 300 million years, is doomed to vanish or remain small and quietly stable. The debate remains unsettled." - Newpaper story
"Men aren't needed anymore, and they're struggling to adapt to being wanted in a society that wants them to adopt female attitudes to relationships and being caring and nurturing." - adapted quote, various sources.

The Mere Male's Masculinity

The Y chromosome in men
is being edited down
kowtowed
to fit a template.

The Y once forked
like a tree,
now flickers—
to "why"? — not be this,
or "why"? — not be that,
as the gene scripts
are overwritten by the
X chromosome’s map.

The mere male masculinity
has indeed become
just that—mere!
Mum!
