The Mask

The face behind the mask—
I can only wonder what it may reveal;
Is there a smile or a frown,
or is there more that lies beyond?

The thoughts unread by others,
are things hidden deep inside;
Behind the mask there is a face,
but to judge—that is not our place.

Eyes dimmed by tears or age appear sad,
but one may be filled with great joy!
With the frown or smile of young and old—
there are many stories left untold.

Think not to read into what cannot be read—
for into the heart, God only can see.
The covering of cloth or of skin,
cannot disclose the truth of what lies within.
