The Manuscript
Some might put on a happy face,
on what others choose to erase.
Other approaches one might take
are labelling it a fake,
putting it on a dusty shelf,
to become a forgotten self,
or, in the subjunctive tense, or -
otherwise placate a censor,
or an editor, who says, you dramatize,
or critics who say it's all lies,
or put it in the wood-chipper there,
or recite it daily like a prayer.
I smile and call it a friend of mine -
just what it is, Frankenstein.
