The Man with The Sign
I saw a man holding a sign
It was so truthfully written
His clothes and his eyes told the story
From addiction, he had been bitten.
Many drove by yelling at him
to get a job and more
Some said aloud, "Don't give him money
for alcohol or drugs, he'd use it for".
My heart started to pound quickly
My eyes filled with tears
Because the man who stood on the corner
did not deserve those leers.
He did not just wake up one day
wanting this for his life
Something devastating caused his pain
perhaps he had lost his wife.
The truthfulness of the sign he held
caused me to reach into my purse
as I watched the man's body shake
I knew from experience this curse.
That fix he desperately needed
The withdrawals were taking him over
If he suddenly stopped this poisonous vice
he may not have had a chance to recover.
I pray that he finally got the help
he so desperately needed
He didn't need my judgment
but the understanding of what he pleaded.
I read the sign he held up in the air
and the honesty written in ink
"I don't need money for food
I need a drink".
As I handed him what I had
He looked down at me with a nod
He knew I knew what he was going through
as I prayed to God.
"Thank you, God, for your precious love
You helped me when others judged me
Give this man a sign from you
that he too deserves to be free".
So never judge what you don't know
of what someone may be going through
because life can change in a moment
Show them the same grace, that someone has shown you.
