The Man With No Shadow

He is the man with no shadow
And I never see his face
But he’s always there beside me
Though he never leaves a trace.
He was once just a distant figure
But slowly year by passing year
He is moving so much closer
Almost getting very near.
He used to be just a blur
Not quite
At the very edge
Of sight,
Gradually now he
Is taking form
Assuming a shape
Almost a norm.
One day he will face me,
This grey constant shade,
Maybe hold out a hand.
If the contact be made
We will walk together
In his realm of gray,
But just now he is still
Some distance away.
I know that day
I see his face
Will be the end
Of one race.
Will anything follow
That coming day
The man with no shadow
Takes me away.
