The Man In The Door

I served in the White House and was very proud to do so. And I'd like to think that there was meaning to my life. I saw many leaders of the world come and go, But by my side, through it all, was my beautiful wife. She was there in the beginning when I was very young, Just starting out, when being a black man wasn't easy. I received both praise and slights from the friends I was among, But my wife kept me grounded with the love that she gave me. I served in the White House for thirty-four years, Serving eight Presidents and many Heads of State. I was at the top of my field amongst all of my peers, Savoring the good times and ignoring the hate. I lived a full life and have memories I'll cherish Of some who were famous and of many who were not. I loved my job...for what more could anyone wish. I hope people were pleased with the service they got. For years, only a humble butler I may have been, But I served my country in my own special way. If I possibly could, I would do it all again. There's no less pride in a job done well every day.
