The Magic Leaf
The spider hoped to catch a bug.
Created a web,
Far above.
The Magic Leaf fell from the sky.
Grasped quickly in the spider's web,
Only hanging by a thread.
Spinning.
Twirling.
Floating in the air.
Never changing shape,
Hanging out in space.
On a little thread,
From the spider's web.
No bug sat upon its face,
The Magic Leaf was the spider's disgrace.
The spider cut the Magic Leaf free and said,
"You have no juice!
You're not much use.
No bug will land on you for me!"
The Magic Leaf floated to the ground,
Yellow and gold without a sound.
A squirrel scampered by,
The Magic Leaf caught his eye.
"A fine addition you'll make to my nest,
Help keep my babies warm while they rest!"
The Magic Leaf stayed for a while,
Helped keep the babies in style.
When the winter winds blew,
The Magic Leaf bid adieu,
I've helped make a fine nest,
Kept your babies warm when they rest.
Now they are bigger,
It's too crowded for all the rest."
Floating again in the air,
The Magic Leaf flew everywhere.
Settling in a stream,
The Magic Leaf grew shinny and wet.
Then was caught in a fisherman's net.
Cast out upon the shore,
The Magic Leaf became dry once more.
Still yellow and gold,
The Magic Leaf became crinkly and old.
A woman walked by,
The Magic Leafs yellow and gold caught her eye.
Stooping to gather The Magic Leaf in her hand,
She crumpled it up and mixed it with sand.
Mumbling to herself,
"You make a fine dye.
I'll put you on a shelf to use before the day goes by."
Soon the woman made a new rug,
With the yellow and gold, the rug twinkled and caught everyone's eye.
The Magic Leaf had found a permanent home,
Never again to be left all alone.
