The Lower Branches

False pride develops reason
that perpetuates its point of hide,
so seeming sense cannot abide.
And so it clings to lofty stride
not feeling once its faults deride,
while humble truth of lower side
does seek its shelter nearer tide
with courage spent, it still is shied,
from elements too fitful, tried.

And men, are so of lustful gain
and also cold to facts remain
the watchful eye can so compress
that wings of safety find their nest
where bounties sciance are their vest.
So help me God, to so address
in times of trouble and duress -
the lower branches, less by less
in thy conditions, my confess!
