The Listening Post
If I listen close
I can hear the gasp,
another soldier
the sound his last.
If I listen close
I can hear the cries,
another soldier
lost his eyes.
If I listen close
I can hear the thud,
another brave heart
the bloody mud.
If I listen close
I can hear the hiss,
the bullet's whine
the bullet's kiss.
If I listen close
I can hear the tears,
a young man lost
his mother's fears.
If I listen close
I can hear the young,
I want my Daddy
leaves their tongue.
If I listen close
I can hear the crack.
of twenty one guns
echoing back.
