The Lessons of Time
Wearily wandering, silently by
The dreams and the wishes of yesterday’s sky,
Remembering far away promises made
Just pieces of flotsam adrift in the shade,
Like explorers of truthfulness they travel on,
Until every connection with yesterday’s gone,
And yet some go on drifting to islands of Prayer
To be cast up forever on golden sands there.
Patiently pondering all that has been
The lessons of time paint a silken sad scene,
While they sit in reflection, and wondrous disdain
As the pages of life turn so slowly again,
But sometimes so rarely, the bookmark of time
Glitters morning set softly like wonderful rhyme,
And the sun settles silver lined fingers once more
As the birth of a day consecrates its own shore.
Then the pages stay open in day dancing light
As those satin soft shadows retreat to the night,
And the dreams and the wishes that drifted in vain
Fall asleep in the chapters of life once again,
But the bookmark still shines with a fireside glow
Though the rains still come down, and the breezes still blow,
For the beacon is lit with the harbour’s deep fire
And the lost hopes and dreams feel each dreamer‘s desire
When each dream finds a dreamer, each hope finds a heart
And then sometimes so preciously, love finds a start,
As the music of life finds a way to renew
All those wonderful things that two dreamers can do,
When the hours are dark, and the passion is deep
And when love is abroad, there is no need for sleep,
For the night is embroidered so delicately
With all that has been, and with all that will be…
